Winchester College

Winchester College

Located an hour away from London by car, train or coach, Winchester College has performed a tradition called “Illumina”, at the end of the autumn term, for two and a half centuries. Every last day of this term classes finish at quarter to five in the afternoon, and pupils come out of classrooms to find scores of candles lighting the surroundings of the playing fields. Since 1862 parents, staff and pupils have met to commemorate the removal of the wall which separated the scholars from the commoners.
