Get into
- Meaning: to become interested in something.
- Example: He got into art. He goes to exhibitions and galleries. He also researches the topic at the library.
Give up
- Meaning: to stop doing something.
- Example: My father has diabetes so he had to give up drinking soda.
Go in for
- Meaning: to like a particular thing or do a particular thing because you enjoy it.
- Example: My Granpa goes in for Tai Chi classes, it relaxes him and keeps him fit.
Go off
- Meaning: to stop liking something or someone.
- Example: I went off shrimps when I had food poisoning.
Grow on
- Meaning: to like something you didn’t like at first.
- Example: I didn’t like dogs at first, but now they are starting to grow on me.
Look forward to
- Meaning: to await something with excitement and pleasure.
- Example: I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Please, call me soon.
Not care for:
- Meaning: not to like something.
- Example: I have to say I do not care for jazz because of its off-key sounds and rhythm.
Take up
- Meaning: to start doing a new activity
- Example: I’m thinking of taking up acting classes because I want to be an actor.
There are also some expressions that are formed by an adjective + preposition or that are only prepositions, which express likes and dislikes. Click on the words in bold to check their meaning.
It's time to practice these verbs and expressions. Besides presenting yourself, consider the following question: What are you passionate about? Think about things you like.
